MenoPausal Skin

Menopausal skin is not the same as ageing skin - Here’s Why:

Menopausal skin changes are not simply a result of getting older. While chronological aging occurs gradually over time, menopause triggers a distinct biological shift within the skin due to declining oestrogen levels. Many women are told that their skin changes are simply because they are getting older. While age does play a roll, menopause skin is different.

As we age, collagen naturally declines at a slow and steady rate, beginning in our late 20’s. This gradual process contributes to fine lines, loss of firmness and change in skin texture over time.

Menopause, however, creates a much more dramatic shift. As oestrogen levels fluctuate and eventually decline, the skin’s structure and function are effected. Research shows that women can lose up to 30% of their skin collagen during the first 5 years of menopause, compare with gradual loss of around 1% per year associated with normal ageing. This is why many women notice sudden changes in their skin during perimenopause and menopause.

Menopausal Skin

Hormonal changes during menopause can lead to: Increase dryness and dehydration, increase in sensitivity, thinning of the skin, slower healing, increased inflammation, loss of density around the jaw and cheeks, increase in pigmentation, hormonal acne, and dull and tired looking skin. These changes are not simply about getting older - they are the result of hormonal changes affecting the skin from within.
